Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blasted Chinese officials as “liars” after they had claimed the surveillance balloon that recently flew across the U.S. was only a weather balloon blown off course.
“They are liars. They are lying about this,” he said. “This was certainly an effort to collect against important information that America doesn’t want in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.”
His comment came during a broader interview with CBN News, when Pompeo was asked to comment on the Chinese spy balloon that had been shot down off the coast of South Carolina two days earlier.
Pompeo replied by saying it was correct to refer to the balloon as a “spy balloon” and called Chinese officials “liars” for claiming otherwise, adding, “You shouldn’t forget they told us that the Wuhan virus wasn’t going to spread, it wasn’t contagious. They hid everything there, too.”

Another GOP politician gunned down in NJ

Another Republican politician has been fatally shot in New Jersey, just a week after a local councilor was gunned down in her car outside her home.
Russell Heller, a councilor in the borough of Milford, was fatally shot Wednesday morning by a former co-worker outside the offices of the energy utility company he worked at, NJ.com reported.
The 51-year-old local councilor was killed in the parking lot by 58-year-old Gary Curtis, who later died of a self-inflicted gunshot, CBS News reported. Officials said Curtis walked up to Heller in the parking lot, shot him, then drove to a parking lot about a mile away and shot himself.
A county prosecutor said investigators have determined the shooting was not politically motivated, according to CBS. A clearer motive has not been disclosed….

Dem congresswoman attacked in DC apartment elevator

Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was assaulted in her Washington, D.C., apartment building Thursday morning, suffering minor injuries. The attacker fled the scene, but a suspect was arrested later in the day after police released a photo of him.
Craig, 50, defended herself from an attacker in her building’s elevator around 7:15 a.m. and “suffered bruising, but is otherwise physically okay,” according to a statement from her chief of staff, Nick Coe.

There is no evidence the attack was politically motivated, according to the statement from Craig’s staff. A police report said that a hate crime is not suspected in the alleged attack on Minnesota’s first openly lesbian member of Congress, CNBC reported.
The alleged attacker fled the scene before officers arrived. The Metropolitan Police Department released an image of his face captured by a surveillance camera.
A suspect — 26-year-old Kendrick Hamlin, who has no fixed address — was arrested Thursday and charged with simple assault, according to a press release….

Former Coast Guardsman Separated for Refusing Vaccine Says He Was Forced to Pay Back Reenlistment Bonus

A former Coast Guard service member who was last year discharged for objecting to the Pentagon’s vaccine mandate said he was forced to pay back a reenlistment bonus, which another former officer described as “an attempt to humiliate” members who opposed the vaccine mandate.
Phil Southwell had served the country for almost 13 years before being discharged in August for objecting to the military vaccine mandate once embraced by the Department of Defense (D0D) and adopted by the Coast Guard. On Dec. 23, President Joe Biden signed the Fiscal 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law, which prescribed the rescission of the mandate.
But that measure was “too little, too late” for Southwell, he said, because he was separated on Aug. 12. Within days of losing his job as an operations specialist, Southwell received a memo, stating that he had to pay back an $18,000 reenlistment bonus from 2019. At the time, he had signed up for an additional four-year reenlistment, but due to the military’s actions against those who refused to take the vaccine, he was unable to finish a term of service that would have ended in 2023.
“Since I couldn’t fulfill the final years of my last reenlistment after getting booted from the Coast Guard, I was immediately required to pay $18,000 back to Coast Guard with only a month’s notice,” he told The Epoch Times.
For Southwell, the experience was “not good,” he said, adding he was “rather disgruntled about it.” Yet, he considered himself lucky because he had always placed his reenlistment bonuses into a retirement savings and investment plan. “But I’m sure there are people out there who didn’t do this and had to spend the money right away, and that sickens me,” he added.
Other U.S. service members who were let go due to their opposition to the vaccine mandate have also been required to pay back recruitment bonuses, Fox News reported….

The percentage of top military leaders to active duty officers is near its highest level in modern military history, according to Congressional Research Service data.
“Frankly, maybe if we would focus our military spending on the soldiers and not having so many generals — the ratio of general officers to enlisted individuals now is so out of whack from where it used to be in our military,” Rep. Jim Jordan, (R-OH), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said in a recent interview on “Fox News Sunday.”
“Maybe if we focused on that — helping the troops who do so much of the work out there for our great country and maybe focus on getting rid of all the woke policies in our military — we’d have the money we need to make sure our troops get the pay raise they deserve, we have the weapons systems and the training that needs to be done, so we’re ready to deal with our adversaries around the planet,” he added. “That’s what we want to focus on.”…
